Smartphone: Samsung overtakes Nokia and Apple
In the second quarter of the fiscal year, sales of smartphones such as Samsung would allow the manufacturer to exceed those of Apple and Nokia. The exact number of devices sold in that period has not yet been announced officially, but it is estimated that Samsung has sold between 18 and 21 million smartphones, compared to 20.3 million iPhones and 16.7 million Nokia products.
The estimates come from Neil Mawston, an analyst at Strategy Analytics, who stressed that the success of Samsung can be attributed almost exclusively to the adoption of Android, the open source operating system that Google is selling abundantly in most regions. The Korean company also distributes Bada smartphone with heart, and although the sale of such devices can be defined as marginal, however, is not negligible.
If the numbers on sales of smartphones in the last three months are still to be confirmed and provisional, not definitive ones are likely to deviate from it a lot and although Samsung does not have surpassed Apple now, probably will by the end of the year. The way to win the first position in the smartphone market is right to push further on the Android offer, especially in fast growing markets such as Brazil and China, said Mawstom. The entry of the Windows Phone, which Samsung could jump on the bandwagon right away, it will be a further stimulus and a possible element to accelerate the shift of the balance between the various manufacturers.
Android is currently present on the products of the Galaxy and is also integrated into the Nexus S, the second product under the brand name Google Android smartphone. The strategy that Samsung has to support Android is not limited to just smartphones, but also to the tablet, and if an ever increasing amount of users choose the right operating system from Google at time of purchase, it seems very likely that by the end of year Samsung can win first place in terms of sales, if it has not already happened.
